my vivaldi spuds were hopeless this year - had no yield at all to speak of over the Christmas period, yet this time last year I had loads of the same variety. Still this was not a huge problem, as I managed to pull up some King Edwards that I had left in the ground under fleece and the several kg I lifted were perfect.

Same here everybody, no luck.  I tried leaving a few of my King Edward potatoes in the ground, covered up, until Christmas Eve but with the -20 temperatures we got here the ground was absolutely solid and I couldn't dig them up.

When I tried nearly a week later when the thaw was on I managed to get the potatoes from the ground but they were soft, full of water and unusable.  :(

Maybe this year I'll dig them up on time and try storing them in sacks or boxes with peat in them before the big freeze possibly happens again.

The main idea here was to get new spuds for Christmas. You may as well lift maincrop for storing, rather than leave them in the ground, as you've found.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I had planted some new potatoes in the hope of getting some for Christmas and was not happy when the foliage all died away,
Thinking I had lost them all I decided to take a look  and was surprised to see just poking through the soil some potatoes. I decided to leave them there as there were still a few weeks to Christmas.

Being as impatient as I am a week later i dug up one of the potatoes and was dissapointed at the size(story of my life ::)) ) so got the rest of them out and was lucky to have enough for a baby meal a real dissapointment.  Like others I won't be bothering this year. :(

I planted 3 containers and the early frosts killed the foliage in early November.  Harvested two and got probably 5 or 6 meals from them and they tasted delicious.  Unfortunately on the weekend I planned to harvest the third, the snow came and it's been snowy/icy ever since, so they've definitely copped it though the soil in the container is frozen solid so I've not been able to empty it!

For the small amount of space they're taking up, I'd probably give them another go, but with better weather protection next time.

I left a few in my potato barrel. A few shoots appeared, more compost went on. Then it rained, and rained, and um, rained some more. Then it snowed ............... Enough said  :(
