hi,

What is the proper name for a (usually circular) hoop of wood or metal that has wire mesh attached on one side. You shovel soil into it, the finer particles sift right through, leaving larger stones and roots in the mesh.

I haven't got a picture of one, because the idea is in my head    in other words i haven't fabricated one yet. Am i right in thinking they are usually round? Wouldn't square be easier/better?

Yes it is 9 minutes past 5 in the morning

want a posh one ,,,,, get a enough wood to make a 4 ft square frame with a bar down its centre ( pallet planks )  will be great for this  cover it with fine chicken wire . put two legs attatched to the frame so it stands up kinda like a notice board .  stand the frame where your digging and making sure the soil is not claggy ..( rotavating it the day afore will break it up loverly )  take shovel loads of soil and throw them against the frame wire and the smaller soil will go through , the stones and rubbish falls onto this side .if you put down a sheet ( tarpaulin) you can collect up the rubbish in it and bin it ....... another munty tip   werks for me

Exactly like the screen used to riddle coal when I were a lad.  Part-time job after school at the local coal merchants - so much per ton - never been fitter in me life.
