Does anyone know if woodchipping are good for fixed chicken runs? i've been using hemp bedding to help keep the mud down but just been on Flyte of fancy web site and they say you only have to change them out twice a year. as i have a disabled husband to look after too anything that helps save time is welcome. thank you  :)

We live fairly near Flyes of fancy and I went to see them about the same thing, yes the stuff they recommend is good, but I was horrified to find out it would cost about £120 for our run.  What we did was get 1/2 a ton of pebbles/small stones from the local builders merchants and laid these with brick edgings to keep them in.  They are about 3 inches deep and great.  I hose it down every couple of days which drains away because of the thickness, and we have heavy clay soil here, and rake it over when necessary.  When I throw in some corn or sunflower seeds they scratch away for ages so it keeps them well occupied, and no more muddy feet, puddles and dirty eggs.  It cost £32, but you will need someone to help you barrow it in.  Previously I had tried bark chips, digging the soil and even wooden pallets.

Thank you. i've only got 4 chickens so it's not that big a run but i think your idea of pebbles sounds great, i will try it. :D
