Greenhouse with overhanging eaves?
« on: January 23, 2011, 17:20 »
Hi all

I've finally got round to putting up the 8x6 greenhouse I was given through Freegle about a year ago. Of course I've forgotten where all the glass was from, and I'm only just realising it must have been reglazed at some point with whatever a previous owner could get, because there are never more than a few pieces of the same size.

This greenhouse differs from my others a) in having sloping walls, which is fine, and b) in having the roof struts overhanging by about 3", which I am a bit concerned about, as there is no lip to hold the lower pane of glass in place. This means that it will only be the spring clips holding the glass.

There are no signs of a make on the greenhouse as it is quite old and oxidised.

Does anyone know of a greenhouse like this? Or do people think maybe I'm missing some kind of lower strut or gutter to stop the glass sliding down?

I'm thinking of improvising something out of narrow metal strips and plastic conduit...

Having left one of my sheets of glass a few mm short of the "stop" and having then tried in vain to persuade it to move with the clips still in place, I would suggest that clips secure the glass pretty effectively (and you could always use extra ones to make sure.)

Gutter/s may or may not "catch" the glass if it slips but is/are essential anyway if you want to catch all that lovely rainwater!  :)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

ta JayG. Another odd thing is that while the roof is about 41" (which will take a 24" and an 18" nicely) the sides are 57", and I can't think what combination that would be. Maybe it had custom-made all-in-one panes?

Have quite a few 24 x 24s so will probably go for 2 of them then get some cut to 10" or so

My other 2 greenhouses went up really easily so I guess I'm due some probs!

Sounds like some aluminium angle or L section pop riveted on the bottom of the roof glazing supports will do the trick. You can use extra rivets as stops for the glass.

Plastic conduit is likely become brittle with sun and frost.

a overhang at that height will dangerous. If the gutter bar as a built in glass stop I would glaze to that with a bigger overlap to the pane above. You will need to make longer Z clips out of thin sheet to secure the top pane from sliding     Bob

ta Bobby but there is no gutter bar - the attached photo might help show things better than my description - so will be going with 8doubles suggestions and making a gutter bar which I can fasten on using square-head bolts under the glazing bars
