Cold Frame Question
« on: January 20, 2011, 14:53 »
Hi I have built myself a cold frame which measures 2 metres x 1.25 metres.

Will the temperature in the frame be sufficiently warmer than outside to allow me to sow Lettuce and spring onions any earlier than I would in the plot? Last season because of the cold winter I couldn't sow my springers until April which meant I didn't get a crop until much later in the salad season.

As long as your coldframe is orientated toward the sun you can bung 'em in a lot earlier.   Cheers,   Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

It's sposed to be roughly 5' warmer inside the cold frame, so can still freeze if the temp outside drops very low. IMO you should be able to sow about a month earlier ;)

I line the inside of mine with polestyrene sheet, and if very cold, cover the top with a piece of bubblewrap.
