I sow mine at the beginning of March. They take apx 6 weeks to get to planting stage, and I can't plant them in the greenhouse till mid April at the earliest (because of cold spring nights for the last few years)

At the beginning of April they go into the g/house in their pots during the day, but I bring them back inside if frost is forecast.......it's a lot of faffing but I can't afford to heat  ::)

About mid-March for me in the North. (relatively speaking compared to Kent).
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

i planted mine yesterday ...i either put them  inside on the kitchen window or hidden behind my blinds on the window in the bedroom.
I dont have a greenhouse ,only a cold frame...its worked for me for the last three years and to stop them getting leggy ,i just turn them round every two days.I use old takeways plastic containers to put the pots in ,they are very handy

Once its warm enough outside, they go in the coldframe,
I have great results.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and onions....

Have a look at post 5 on page 1, if you've missed it.

You'll not need to turn the plants and I guarantee they will be even stronger.

I'm surprised you can get them into a cold greenhouse in March? - my cold greenhouse doesn't stay above 10C minimum until well into April (unless you (DD) are bringing yours in on cold night like MoS?)

I use the conservatory (also unheated, but minimum temperatures warmer than the free-standing greenhouse), and easier to bring them in if we get really cold weather - particularly as they are still in pots in the Conservatory but will be planted in the Greenhouse border natch!)

I sow mine mid Feb and expect them to be 4' tall, or more, by the time I plant them out - I reckon that will be quite a challenge to "hide behind my blinds on the window in the bedroom" :D

Not sure if the last was aimed at me, Kiristen, as nowhere do I mention putting mine in the greenhouse in March.

To clarify, my schedule is thus:

February: Potential greenhouse tomatoes started indoors on window sills. Get the foil treatment as soon as they emerge, potted onto 3" pots when large enough. They remain indoore.

Mid March: Ditto with the potential outdoor ones.

April: Toms go into the greenhouse into large plant pots in their final position

Late April: Outdoor toms go into heated greenhouse in their 3" pots.

Late May/June Outdoor toms planted in the plot.

That's a relief! Sorry I mis-read it as

MOS : I sow mine at the beginning of March. ...

At the beginning of April they go into the g/house ...

DD: About mid-March for me in the North

which I stupidly read as you putting them in the greenhouse, rather than sowing them.

I'd like to say that "normal service will now be resumed" ... but I'm not too confident about that!
