Cheapest place for fruit ?
« on: January 06, 2011, 10:54 »
Hi all,

Just been told that a plot is comming up soon on the new site i want so i've been looking for new fruit trees, bushes, strawbs, goosberrys (etc etc).
I put everything into the cart and the overall price came to ..............£212.58p
Can anyone recomend anywhere cheaper than Rogers?
I don't want to use my old stuff from my old plot as i made a few mistakes in my choices, so i want to start again, but at that price im not so sure.
Thats not for all the fruit either as i will need to take hardwood cuttings from the goosberrys, currents (etc) to build up stock.

Whilst I never got the opportunity to progress my plan, when looking around for new raspberry bushes, I found these quite reasonable:

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Aldi and Lidl are good places to get fruit trees and bushes, some times the variety is't the same as advertised, Lidl seems to be the better of the 2. They will be on sale in early sping.

You're stuck with their choice, though, if like me you were after early mid & late summer fruiting raspberries, they don't fit the bill. OK if you're not too fussed though.

Hi Stevens706

I got my last lot of stuff from Lidle, Aldi, Morrisons and Wilkinsons.
The only problem there is they only stock specific varieties and Wilkinsons don't have the variety marked on their goosberrys, currents, blackberrys (etc).
Im after Pax and Lakemont Goosberrys, A Courte Pendu Plat apple tree, Doyenne du comice Pear tree and quite alot of other named varieties of strawberrys, raspberrys, grape, blackberry, and the list goes on.

I haven't bought fruit from them, but I have had lots of hedging and trees and I'm a satisfied customer :)

With trees you need to be really careful buying from Lidl, Aldi etc as the type of rootstock on an allotment is crucial - and as far as I can remember, supermarkets don't specify what their rootstocks are.

You really do not want a full sized fruit tree on an allotment - it will deprive you, future tenants, and neighbours of considerable amounts of water / light / nutrients / growing space over the years.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
