Cow dung instead of horse manure?
« on: August 05, 2007, 20:05 »
Old geezer down the lottie said he uses cow dung instead of horse manure.

He says it stops a lot of weeds that come from the spores in horse manure and there is less chance of lockjaw.

What do you reckon folks? Is this right?

not sure about lockjaw mate as for the weeds you get them in any muck mostly docks, nettles and thistle depends on what there eating realy.
anyhow your rotavathay will kiss em goodbye whatever they are.
one thing i must say cow muck is easier to spread on the ground than horse muck and you can get it in bigger quantities
feed the soil not the plants
organicish
you learn gardening by making mistakes

Ditto on cow muck easier to spread, mostly because there's less bedding. But spores from horse manure? That's a new one on me. All depends on what the horse eats, much of which cows and humans eat. Were his horses eating funny mushrooms?

No quite a common piece of knowledge. You have to let the horse muck rot down well before use.

You can get lockjaw from working the land, in the garden - hence doctors recomend if you do it alot or it is your job then their are measure that can be taken.

I thought lockjaw was tetanus. You can get it through open cuts, but it can be injected against.

hmm. Had a tetanus jab 10 years back. Time for another I think!

Got a great supply of horse manure, 75 tonnes he reckons (what do i know   ) dumped by a bloke with a small holding over his fence, but I would try the cow dung if I came across a supply.

the spores he is talking about are from old hay  and bedding that hasnt been stored properly ,its caled farmers lung . cow manure is better as it contains 90% more dodo than horse as horse apples dont rot down as fast due to the dry bulky nature of the manure
still alive /............
