Snow bound chickens
« on: December 17, 2010, 11:49 »
We have about 3 - to 4 inches of snow here at present. OH opened up the coup this morning and the hens just refused to come out. One then flew from the coup to the fence and refused to move. The other hen kept coming down the ramp - standing on one leg but not venturing on to the snow. Finally at 11.00 OH went out again and put some food and water in the coup and rescued the poor chick who would not leave the safety of the fence. Looks like they are staying in the coup until the snow goes.  :) :)

When we had snow a few weeks ago we actually cleared all the snow from the patio (where the chicken coops currently are) as it was the only way we could coax them out to stretch their legs and eat something.
The youngest ones were still rather unimpressed and spent most of the day hiding in one of the coops.

It says something doesn't it when the chickens have the snow cleared away for them before we got round to clearing the drive!

We got a bucket load of snow today and even though they have a roof on their run, the henhouse gang resolutely stayed under the house all day, venturing out only for a quick feed now and then  ::)

I went to give them some treats this afternoon and check their water wasn't frozen and got a right telling off 'cos they were unimpressed with the white stuff

Ours are normally reluctant to set foot on the snow but once they discovered all the goodies raining down from the wild bird table (which has been very busy) there was no stopping them.
They were ploughing through 4" deep snow as if they did it every day. :D

The chicken house apart from under a roof and surrounded by tarpulins also have trees around it. Girls also have straw to scratch away in. If only the water wouldn't ice up!!!

I built a little weather shelter for my girls back in the summer, it turned out to look more like a bus shelter so that is what we call it now!  Anyway i thought that there would be no problem when the snow came as they had their bus shelter to peck around in, but oh no!  Even though their door goes straight into the shelter, would they come out the first day it snowed.  I tryed all day with treats and goodies but they refused!  Next day they came out for a little corn but quickly went back in thier house.  I was reluctant to put their water in the house as i didnt want their bedding getting wet and i didnt want to put food in there either because of rats so i needed to think of somthing.  Third day i came up with a plan!  Put a bag of straw down on the floor of the bus shelter... all four hens immediatly came out and started to scratch around as if all was normal.  What funny little things.  Who would have thought they would be so frightend of the white stuff!

Ours have a lot of space next to the coop which is under cover and has heated water and food, but, they get up, moan at me about the weather and then stand in front of the garage doors waiting for me to open them. They like the garage; lots of things to tip over, explore and generally destroy.

I hadn't realised that some chooks are not keen on snow.  I've seen so many photos of them out in it.
Ours are under cover so normally they only get to view it through the weldmesh, but a lot has blown in through the wire this year and about half of their run had a shallow covering.
They all refused to walk on it despite their food and water being in that area.  Had to move everything for them.
No appreciation that I'm having to clamber through at least 10 inches to see to them everyday!

My other half has suggested moving the coop into the store with all the cold weather so they get some extra insulation on a night.  I just have visions of the place being wrecked in no time, not to mention poop all over the place because of course any new surroundings have to be throughly explored!

They've already claimed the open fronted summer house as their hang out spot this winter.  Everytime I look up the garden there's a mob of them in their, perched on the two chairs and on the little table!  I don't have the heart to shoo them out so will just have to clean it up come spring.

When the snow first fell and was 'soft' my girls wouldn't go more than about 2 feet from their coop. Now it has frozen and has a 'crust' they are more adventurous and walk about a bit further, until the 'crust' breaks and they sink!!!! Much squawking and flapping until they are back to the safety of their coop.
I was put on this earth to accomplish a certain number of things; right now I am so far behind I will never die.

one of my younger ones just stands on the grassy bits and yells when he wants to move.  so I have to put on my coat, scarf and boots and go and move him.  Every ten minuted.  Cheeky chick!  but thats why we love them...

Everything looked so beautiful when the snow came. Now it's been laying on the ground for so long my field looks revolting. Tramped down snow with poop staining everthing..yuck...I'm heartily fed up and so are the hens.
