Giant Alliums from seed
« on: April 30, 2009, 21:13 »
Hi all

Thought I would let you all know that I planted my seeds and loads have germinated!  They are about 2" tall now.  What should I do with them to grow on.  Got first sets of real leaves and looking strong.  Should I pot them individual now or wait?  How long till they are mature and flower etc????  Advice needed.

RHS says it takes several years for them to reach flowering size :(
I'd pot them into small size insert tray pots or plastic cups (with holes in of course) for a while till they look really strong enough to plant out. :)

As MoS says, don't be in too much of a hurry to plant these out as other wise they will be decimtaed by slugs --- one chomp is all it takes with little stems  :tongue2:

Definitely pot them individually, and keep moving them into progressively larger containers as the bulbs can get quite large. When you feel they're strong enough, put them outside and mark off the area so you don't forget and accidently cultivate it.

I had one giant Allium, it has gone mad, and now I've got Alliums, whether I like it or not
