the link I posted is the type I would like but a bit longer - however sadly way out of my price range  :(. With skills like yours you should set up a little business to run alongside your other work.
Staffies are softer than you think.

Goodness me Eddie.  It's a case of being in the right place isn't it.  To have access to such wonderful (free) wood and having the space to build such great buildings and objects is not within the experience of us mere DIY mortals ;)

We have to use a bit of expensive warped deal or old pallet wood :(

Your pictures are certainly inspirational if unattainable.

wish I had the ability to make such things, sadly carpentry/joinery is not one of my skills. Pig keeping and butchery are the next skills I want to learn (hence the desire for a big good quality butchers block  :D).

If you ever need wood for a specific project let me know, as whilst I can't promise anything, its nice to be able to try and help out where I can.

I'm a bit of hoarder when it comes to wood. I'm always pulling bits off the fire where other have thrown them out. The problem is one of time for the sawmill. It takes too long to look through and sort pieces of wood out.  You may for example have an 8' long piece of 6"x 1" that has  a massive knot across the middle. It can't be sold, and would just get in the way. It doesn't matter to me about the knot, as I would simply use what I could from both sides of it.

My problem is that I just don't know when to stop! :D

I bought a lamb a few weeks ago from the farmer where I rent my workshop. I turned up to collect it when the butcher was there, and it bought back happy childhood memories of making my favourite shopping trip to the butchers. I used to love that place, and if I could change jobs, I could quite happily become a meat butcher instead of a wood butcher!
In respect of your butchers block, it is a shame that you weren't closer. I would have bartered some meat as an exchange for making one. ;) Out of interest, what size would you need?

This will make you laugh Eddie  ::)

As a young married couple we used to buy a DIY magazine.  One month in it there was a project to make a storage bin for keeping off cuts of wood in which you always have left over from other projects.

The magazine project was quite detailed going into materials, sizes, tools required.  It then in the last paragraph told you how to stack the various sizes into it.  The very last sentence said something like "When the bin is full, take all the offcuts out and burn them and start collecting again." (I'm not sure if it was the April edition of the magazine.)

So true in many instances no matter how many off cuts you have you've never really got the right piece and have to go out and buy some more anyway ::)

having looked at our local butchers (who have 2 one about 3 feet and the other about 5 feet) and also watched a friend chop up a Dexter cow for me and Grannie Annie I would want something along the larger size. However first I have to learn how to care for a couple of rare breed pigs and get Jim to build me a new kitchen to house one of these blocks. Oh well every thing in due course.
Good luck with your future projects  :)

Gee, your old 'woodshed' looks like my current one, but without the metal supports  :D I really must get around to building something. My problem is that I live in a farm area where everyone scavenges for everything. When the county cut down a dying maple tree on my property we turned down so many people who asked for the wood and also had to keep night watch for the ones who tried to help themselves until we finished cutting and splitting.

wow you have some nice wood in your wood burning stock - ours consists of keroin (sp?) from old lorry bodies and a mixture of hardwood and softwood window and door frames.

I think the wood is keruing joyfull. My father was a coachbuilder and I remember this extremely hard and heavy timber was in constant use.

Your work is fantastic Eddie. I don't know where you are but the easy solution is for you to make a bespoke butcher's block for joyfull ( for a small fee or barter ). Transport is easy to arrange just pass it on from member to member until it reaches Lincolnshire

There you are .... sorted. Can't waste a talent like that!

just need to grow those pigs first, so won't be for another year or so
And yes Thrift that is the correct spelling thanks, very hard timber used a lot in vintage lorry bodies but sadly it also brings me out in a terrible rash. Ash also was used a lot for the coach built cabs - several of our lorries have ash framed cabs  :)

That all takes me back joyfull to the 'works' and the smell of sawdust and the noise of planers and circular saws and my father showing me the different timbers, explaining where they were grown.

The lorries are a far cry from that era now!

Steady Thrift.  A swap is fine on these forums but "a small fee" is an absolute NONO.  I don't want to have to ban Joy and Eddie, we need them both here
