/Bantam left outside over night help
« on: December 01, 2010, 13:35 »
Hello

Some how my bantam didn't make it into the hen house last night.  Found her this morning when checking their water not frozen.  I have her in a box in the house at the moment.  Is there anything I should be doing.  I'm new at this.

You are doing the right thing. Chickens are remarkably hardy and I've had birds roosting in trees in the past all winter. Let her warm up a bit, give her some food and water and then back to her friends. She should be absolutely fine.

Yes she will be fine as orchardlady says - I have 14 living outside at the moment (and some of these are roosting in trees with no leaves on them). Mine all get a nice warming porridge or layers pellets made into a mash with hot water every morning. One of my bantams has not slept in a coop for several years - except for when she is being a broody hen and sadly she then teaches her young how to tree roost
Staffies are softer than you think.

I also have a bunch of chickens (including 2 sabelpoots which are smaller than pigeons) roosting in a bare tree     IT doesn't seem to be doing them any harm, and they do have the opportunity of going inside, they just choose not to!

It's amazing to hear of chickens roosting outside in this weather. I've been lying awake at night worrying about ours being too cold in their coop.

I would have none left if I left mine out. My friend lost three hens to the fox this week  :(
