how to fatten up a cockerel?
« on: November 26, 2010, 08:41 »
i have about 12 cocerels at the moment which will all shortly start crowing and i have made the descion that i am going to despatch and eat them, they have all been on growers with a bit of mixed corn thrown in.
what is the best way to fatten them up and what do i feed them on, at what age is it best to dispatch them?
i have Welsummer, Legbar, sussex, bluebelle. (i know some breeds are not really bred for the meat but how do i make the ost of them)

many thanks

if your growers is medicated you need to get them off that onto unmedicated before you cull them. There is a product called finisher - or you could put them on layers or even corn I think. Some breeds are best when they are about 25 weeks but failing that cull them younger and just eat the little there is if your neighbours are a problem.
Staffies are softer than you think.

If you do really want to fatten them (fat not meat) then lots of maize is the thing to feed.
