Blackrock not laying
« on: November 15, 2010, 17:00 »
I have 3 hens, a warren, a blackrock and a speckled. I have had them for 18 months now, from point of lay. They have free run of the garden all day and are fed layers pellets with the odd handful of corn twice a day. Since May this year the blackrock has stopped laying. She went lethargic so I took her to the vet who gave her antibiotics. She is much livelier now, but is still not laying and her "poo" is white like milk. I have also tried Citrocidal, but still the same. Has anyone any suggestions please?

I have heard of a few black rocks that have stopped laying for long periods/dont start laying for a year or 2.  As black rocks were stabilised by one family, you could possibly phone them and find out if there is anything they could recommend for their birds.
Maybe she will begin if you wait 'till next spring, as the light levels are fading now and it is colder.

Good luck

Welcome to the forum, Chris.  :)

Have you wormed black rock and protected her from lice and red mites?  Try Flubenvet for the worms and some diatom slurry  for the red mites and lice.  If you type red mite into the search box in the top right-hand corner you will find all sorts of info.

Does she have a temperature?  You can take this by feeling under the wing of one of your other hens then under her wing to see if she feels hotter.

Some people on the forum recommend poultry spice

If you type chicken Pooh into the search box in the top right-hand corner you will find some pictures that you can use to compare.

I'm sure someone more experiences will be along to add to this.  In the meantime, good luck and keep us posted.

Thanks CluckyChicken and Bantam novice.
She has been wormed and lice powdered. The vet confirmed she had no lice, she was the correct temperature, but slightly under weight. I did look at the "poo pics" before posting this. It did show the type she is doing, said she was too hot and was drinking to cool down, but observation shows she is not drinking more than the other two.

I've had two black rocks for about 18 months now. One of them lays nearly every day, except when she's moulting, and the other one has only laid about half a dozen eggs in all that time. But she does go and sit in the coop every day and make a lot of cackling noises!

I would use poultry spice, it really is very good and lasts for ages.  Use apple cider vinegar in the drinking water as well.  Other than that if she is well enough then there is nothing wrong with her and she will come into lay when she is ready.

Hi V V
Thanks for the info. My Black Rock used to lay daily, huge eggs. Then stopped. Thought she might be molting. She used to sit in the nest box too, sometimes on an egg that had been laid by one of the other two hens, so we quickly removed the other eggs in case she was getting broody. It's the milky poo which is worrying.

Thanks Alisonwo.
I have some cider vinegar and will get some poultry spice. I did try limestone flour, but couldn't find the quantity or frequency to give, so that's still in the cupboard.
