Control of mares tail weeds
« on: October 29, 2010, 17:03 »
There is an advert on this site that comes up occasionally at the top of the page from:--

http://www.progreen.co.uk/index.php?c=55&p=156&gclid=CIrg4vjc9J8CFc9i4wodTg2gXQ

Does anyone know if it is as good as advertised?  It seems a lot of money but if it does get rid of mares tail it would be worthwhile for me, it would save a lot of backbreaking digging every year.

Apart from whether it works or not it is for Professional use, so I think that unless you have the necessary training, you shouldn't be able to buy it

Collect your mates tails and boil them up in a couple of pints of water,  add some soft soap and use as a general fungicide.  :tongue2:  Cheers,   Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

hy does it get advertised on this site then? I was looking at this also, but from past experience i dont think anything will completely rid a plot of the dreaded mares tail
Start at the beginning, and finish at the end!!

Sorry Tony but we cannot recommend home made remedies on the forums.

I'm afraid we have no control over what is advertised.  Google does it automatically.

Did I read somewhere that you need to crush them slightly to aid absorption of the weedkiller?
Cheese makes everything better.

Having looked at the safety protection required I don't think that I am prepared to even try this stuff.  It looks too dangerous for me.  Comment from their web site:-

Hand protection: Wear nitrile rubber gloves of at least 0.4 mm thickness. Wash
contamination from the gloves immediately and dispose of safely if perforated or
contaminated on the inside. Wash hands before eating, drinking or smoking and
before using the toilet.

Skin and body protection: Wear a standard coverall and Type 6 suit. Overalls
should be worn under a chemical protection suit and should be professionally
laundered frequently. Do not eat, drink or smoke while working. Wash hands and
face before breaks and immediately after handling the product.

Afew years ago i had a forest of marestail growing through the gaps on a flagged area on my plot.
i let it grow to about 6ins, brushed it with a yard brush to bruise the growth and sprayed with round-up, repeated the brushing and spraying after 6weeks. 6weeks later all died-back and very little regrowth in the last 2yrs

I've seen on here, someone say 'Don't let it see a Sunday'

There's mares tail on other peoples plots near to mine, but it hasn't reached me. Yet

That's what I always tell people.

I have vertually killed out a very heavy infestation on my plot by a good dig over and removing as many roots as possible.  Through the growing season I "never let it see a Sunday".  The bits that do still come up are very thin and weak.
