Things to expect during a moult?
« on: October 31, 2010, 07:03 »
with all your combined knoledge would it be possible to make a lost of things I can expect and not to worry about while my lou is moulting she hasn't given me any eggs fo over a month . I think that is normal also she is eating less and being very timid and won't squat like before. I just don't know what is normal and would hate to miss any signs of something more serious because I hadn't asked.
Thanks in advance  :)

It all sounds normal to me, mine tend to mope about and show less interest in food. I dug over a piece of ground and let my moulting hen have it to herself so she could fill up with worm flavour protein. If i let the younger faster non-moulting hens in there at the same time she would get very little.
Might even cough up the cash for some live mealworm as she is not very fond of tuna.

Moulting always takes it out of my girls, they seem very down and not interested in much but once the new feathers come through they are back to normal. I give my girls some poultry spice on the food and they enjoy that.

You can give them some tinned cat food for extra protein. I make a hot mash of pellets catfood meal worms and corn, they are like vultures even if they are generally "off" their food.

most will not lay during a moult as all their energy has to go into producing new feathers. Some people give their girls cat food (not chicken ones) to help with the protein but I just let mine carry on as normal and give their egg laying a break.
Staffies are softer than you think.
