Moving Bamboo
« on: October 31, 2010, 11:33 »
I have a loverly big bamboo in the garden.  Been in for about 4 years now, 10ft high jobbie... my personal favourite plant of all time.

I'd like to move it (and divide it at the same time to spread it out a bit in it's new home...)

Anyone have any tips?  I'm not sure on the variety as such, but it doesn't spread, it's kinda like a clumpy thing.

Cheers,
Rich

Both my clump-forming bamboos came from friend's established plants simply by digging out a chunk of roots and shoots from near the edge of the plants using a sharp spade. This was done in about March to enable them to get off to a flier.

Obviously you can do the same thing whilst moving it at the same time; you may find the centre of the clump is a bit knackered so you can discard that whilst still creating several new plants!  :)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

Awesome... I suppose moving it now would be a bad idea?

Trouble is the weather and soil are both much colder now so your transplants will do very little in the way of putting down new roots (early autumn) or rooting and growing (spring.)

Bamboo is pretty tough stuff though so you would probably get away with it (could you hedge your bets by splitting off and planting a few new clumps and leave the rest of it in situ just in case, or would that defeat the object of the exercise?)
