Sowing Garlic ( shortest day of the year? )
« on: October 13, 2010, 18:44 »
Very early this year ( feb/march ) i sowed some garlic cloves in the hope to get some garlic. I got some very small bulbs when i did harvest them.

However since then I have heard that tradition has it, you sow garlic on the shortest day of the year and harvest on the longest. Is this true?
Ive looked online and the shortest day this year seems to be 21st December and the longest next year is 21st June. Its not actually the shortest and longest day in terms of time but in sunlight hours.

Does it make too much difference if i started to sow some now? Or is it too mild still?
I realise that garlic needs a cold spell or a good frost to help the cloves turn into big bulbs.

Cheers

Matt

Mine's going in tomorrow, all being well.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I put mine in on Sunday.  Cloves in local garden centre, although meant to be organic and therefore more likely to take are way too pricy so we've taken a chance with a few bulbs broken up off the supermarket shelf...  Fingers crossed!

Last year I grew 80 - some were too small to bother with, gave some to family and saved some to plant - I can see me running out of garlic to eat about January. Even my 6 year old is addicted to garlic crutons in soup or to sprinkle on pasta!
