Sexing challenge - hen or cockerel?!
« on: October 10, 2010, 10:39 »
Here are some photos of one of our silkies - (It) is approximately 19/20 weeks old.

I would be extremely interested to read what sex you think (it) is and why?!!

Apologies for the poor quality pics, I only had my phone on me at the time.

silkies are notoriously difficult to sex and often you cant tell until they either crow or lay an egg  ;)
Staffies are softer than you think.

I would have thought it would have at least started trying to crow by now if it was a he.

I have quite a few boys but only 2 of them crow and they are older than 20 weeks.

Thanks everyone.

I am really unsure about her (hopefully, eh?!) She had the most undeveloped pompom of them all, and looked really ropey on her head. Now she's starting to fill out and she's getting a really beautiful look about her.  Lovely feathery feet, a nice fluffy head and skirt.  I was just a bot worried about the little gingery feathers which are appearing down the back of her neck - I tried to get them in the photo.  Thought they might be the beginning of little streamers.

She doesn't behave like a cockerel, she doesn't show the others food, she isn't first out the house in the morning.  There doesn't seem to be one bird which takes control over the others.  But hey, modern men?!  Tee hee.

She also has more of a collar than any of the others, but I don't know if some hens do.
