preparing ground for plum tree
« on: October 04, 2010, 13:32 »
I have a space for the plum tree (trailblazer) I've ordered and waiting for its november delivery. Just wondering what should I do with the ground. It is at the moment 10" pit where I culled the rootball of tasmanian fern. It still has the hair roots (pretty dense)  of the fern around the side of the pit. what should I do to make the plum tree feel home!!
One kid is handful. Two kids.... Example for chaos theory. Hats off to my mum who managed three...

I would dig a bigger hole, say about 24" diameter put in some compost, well rotted manure etc and dig around with the fork in the bottom to loosen the soil and mix in the compost. Then I would put in some slow release fertiliser. Plant the tree with the soil at the same level it was, speading out the roots and firming it well, incorporating more compost Then give it a good drink of water.
But I'm no expert.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

I would skip the manure as it encourages too much sappy growth. Use the bone meal slow release fertilizer.

Noshed sounds spot on about the prep.  I try to work to the saying that "its better to put a $1 tree in a $10 hole, than a $10 tree in a $1 hole"
