We have had 2 tiny wee eggs in the last 2 days and am wondering what happens if a hen wants to lay in an nest box and there is already an egg there?  We have 3 chooks and 2 nest boxes.  Will she still lay and will other egg get broken?

you will find they all prefer to use the same nest box and can be heard moaning when somebody is in there already

Arent they funny? Hubby was in when Gracie laid her wee egg and he said the other 2 chicks were in the house with her acting as mid-wifes, giving lots of rosey and encouragement. Brilliant!!

I have a hen house with ten nest boxes and some boxes are never laid in and some boxes will have five or six eggs in when I come to collect. Hens are actually very gentle with their feet and will settle down on the already laid eggs very carefully also an egg is a surprisingly robust article. It has to withstand a broody treading on them at least once a day for the incubation period. Enjoy your eggs.

Thanks for that.  We got another one this morning and it's a wee bit bigger than other two.  Hubby found it and didnt move it as he said he isnt always in at that time to remove eggs anyway! Wow wanted to kill him!!    Every offering is precious to me.
