Jerusalem artichokes on heavy clay
« on: July 17, 2007, 10:37 »
Advice please.

I would like to grow Jerusalem artichokes because they make beautifully creamy soup with a really delicate flavour.  However, my allotment is damp, heavy clay.  The books tell me that JAs are best grown on light, well-drained soil but are pretty tolerant.  Has anyone succeeded in growing them in conditions like mine?

Thought it was going to be a nice day but the heavens have just openned again!

My plot is heavy clay and this is the 1st time I've grown Jerusalem Artichokes.  I decided to put the tubers right at the back of the plot against a fence (because I believe they get very tall!)  So far, they are growing well but there is significant slug and snail damage on the leaves.  What the harvest will be like will be anyones guess!
Failure is only a temporary change in direction to set you straight for your next success.
Only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly.
