It's a worm and it looks as though it's had a bit of its tail chopped off.  You should put them to some use and go fishing!

Looks like the mealworms I feed to the birds.  They are vegetarians, the meal worms that is.   A mealworm is a beetle in larvae form.  Look up images of mealworm on google and have a look.
