winter spuds survival
« on: September 17, 2010, 18:26 »
planted soe winter spuds and no sooner were they in the ground than the green foliage started to show :) 3 days later they look like sad little plants :( we have had rain here in canterbury so its not lack of water however the last couple of nights have been cold i am guessing this is why they look sad? i have covered them today with a poly tunnel type cloche (spelling).
will they survive?

thanks

think they were duke of york variety

absolutely need frost protection, when mine have been caught by the frost I have cut the tops off and they have come again under protection.  If you leave the frost deadened bits on the plant is prone to secondary disease

Cross your fingers and everything else that we don't get a winter like the last one. Even with fleece or cloches or whatever no potato would survive the severe frosts we had before the end of last year.

thanks for the advice when you say cut the tops off do you mean actually scalp the whole foliage back to ground level or just remove the sad bits

I just took off anything that looked dead (which was most of it actually!)

It'll certainly keep some degrees of frost off, but you'll need to ensure sufficient light to keep the foliage growing, and if a harsh frost is forecast I would suggest fleecing the foliage and wrapping the pot in bubblewrap or something to do everything to protect it.  But ensure that you don't leave it in the bubblewrap permanently if it will prevent moisture evaporating / create fungal conditions.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
