Butternut Squash F1-no female flowers...?
« on: August 31, 2010, 09:02 »
:( I have four vigorous plants -Wilko `winter` F1 and huge number of flowers but still not a single female hence no fruit. Do I give up, or keep hoping-what`s the secret/where did I go wrong?

Hi,
I'm sure it is too late now, you need to be thinking about picking them before the first frost and I can't see anything happening now for you. Shame isn't it.
I have about 25 on 4 plants, one of them huge. One plant had nothing so I took it up to give the others room.
2 out of 4 melon plants 'outdoor wonder' didn't have anything so they have been taken up too.

I have four plants and only one fruit - about three inches long, so no hope of it ripening. The gent on the next allotment has about ten plants, and about forty huge squash!

I only have one plant and it has two small squashes on it.  I expect that it will freeze before they get a chance to grow to maturity but at least this year it actually formed squashes rather than the last time where I got absolutely nothing.  Will try again next year.

Is there a knack to it? I didn't get any female flowers either from 4 plants, so again no fruit  :(
They looked really healthy when I planted them aout and I gave them lots of "food"...

They are noted for forming male flowers only at the beginning, but then usually change to some of each. Perhaps the weird weather this year has stopped your plants from making the change over :(
