for agricultural soils you'd use about 6-8t per acre (2kg per m2) to correct a low pH like 5.  I'd try at 0.5kg/m2, mix in and retest after wetting and time.  If you are with car, you could collect from lime quarries up North. ground mined limestone (CaCO3) and chalk (CaCO3) have neutralising value 45, these are 'natural and as mined'. Burnt lime CaO and slaked lime (CaOH) {builders lime?} have NV circa 100- but as other good lottie folk say - it'll burn ur eyes.  Lime's really good for adding structure to clay soils too.  but I'd go for O/M too.  As for readings - I'd agree vegs will really struggle at pH 4-5 if they grow at all. only ur pots will stand that.....  Pots are ok with soil up to 7- but they get scab if there's fresh lime in the soil, so you'd not want to lime the potato area until after harvest. phew, glad thats off me chest
