I've grown them for the first time this year, picked some in September, and some more last month, and still got some in the ground which all seem fine.

Hubby reckons the horse manure we piled on last winter has done wonders for this years crop (2nd year for growing veg).

I had this problem a couple of years ago and put it down to being grown too close together. Didn't grow any last year, but this year I have grown Helenor, started off in modules then spaced at 10 inches and grown under a debris netting tunnel. They are turning out to be really big and round  :)

I did have a look around the site this morning and noticed quite a lot of the long thin ones, so it seems quite a common problem this year.
Cheers, Comfortably Numb.

I'm just off down the greenhouse. I won't be long ..........................

Mine are the same even though I sowed straight into one of the raised beds and thinned out when necessary, they were watered enough but for whatever reason they are just not ROUND.....  :D :D

You all know that swedes are members of the brassica family and that maybe you should add lime to the soile before sowing? That has helped mine. They aren't the biggest but better than I have had before.

I've grown three types this year (ACME Purple, Best of All and Marian) and almost all have been pretty poor, not much swelling/roundness at all. Notwithstanding the manure, liming, spacing etc. issues, perhaps its just been a pretty poor year for swede this year?

I'll try again next year...

Phill  :)
