I'm growing Chieftan Squash for the first time this year, couldn't get Hunter Squash seeds.  There are quite a few big 10" long ones that look really good and feel heavy and solid.
Silly question:  Please, how do I know when to  harvest them? Do I just leave them in until I want to cook them, or bring them in to store?

Try to leave them growing outside until they change colour, then cut them off with a bit of stalk and bring them in to store somewhere frost free, they all taste better after a couple of weeks in storage.....if you can bare to wait

If you do get frost forecast before this happens then cut and bring inside anyway.

If the stalk breaks fairly easily I usually think they are ready to harvest
