Weed Killer when starting new allotment
« on: July 10, 2007, 16:09 »
Hi

I have just a got allotment (monday) which is covered with grass.

This is my first allotment and I am thinking of using a weedkiller to kill all the weeds and then turn it over.
I need recommendation on weedkiller which will decompose itself in 4 weeks after I have applied it so that I can grow winter vegetables in it.

But I need to kill all the weeds before I start.

any recommendations which one should I use for the whole allotment.

regards
-Gundeep

Round up. have a look at Johns section on clearing a new plot, he gives loads of good advice and will answer most questions your thinking of asking here, good luck and put some hard graft in to weap the rewards.

Hi Gundeep - As Aidy says Round Up. A fellow plotter did my new plot this year after I had hand dug part and he took pity on my poor back. It did get rid of grass but the bindweed and mares tail still invades. The only thing I found was the roots of the couch grass that had died made turning over with a fork more difficult afterwards- but it did save me time - on balance i think if I had wanted to wait I would have had the whole lot done.  :)

I applied weedkiller towards the end of January this year and which killed all the weeds.  However, they are now back with a vengance.....  almost like I never treated the plot....  I left the plot about 2 months so that everything was dead then rotovated it.  <sigh>

hi all, I'm just about to display my ignorance, but hey, if you don't ask dull questions you never learn. I've posted elsewhere about raised bed cos of weed problems, I've had my plot 4 years and that was all grass and I have cleared it many times. Anyway, how soon can you plant veg seeds safely after using round up? I'm grateful for your knowledge.
