Which Apricot???
« on: August 25, 2010, 08:56 »
Hello everyone,  I'm new to this forum and new to allotment gardening!

I would like to get an apricot tree for the allotment and was wondering if anyone could make any recommendations as to which variety to get?  I use apricots mainly in cooking and for jam - so being able to pick and eat straight from the tree is less important.

Any suggestions would be very gratefully received!

Thanks,

Mary

Moorepark is an all around apricot, quite hardy, and available in the UK as well. It's a standard tree but with pruning can be kept to a manageable height. Here's more info:

Difficult!  Moorpark has been around for ages, but there are several new varieties on the market which might be superior.

I guess the problem with apricots is not with hardiness, but getting them to ripen in our often cool, grey summers.

If I were you I would look at catalogues from places like Chris Bowers and take your pick.
