Hi-hope someone can help me here
I have had four chickens for about a year now and they have always been happy, healthy and spoiled hens! For the last three weeks though, they have decided they don't want any bedding in their coop and scrape it out and throw it all over their pen. I am very scrupulous about cleaning the coop every week and remove any poo I find every day. So why are they doing it? They even take out the newspaper I line the floor with before putting down the straw!!

Hi there, have you checked for mites? Maybe they are trying to be as thorough with cleaning as you are? Just a thought? Do they get to exercise out of the pen?

could there be grain still in the straw, could their food be getting into the straw so they are scratching for it?

Use Snowflake shavings or Hemcore for better absorbancy.  Straw is for pigs and donkeys and can harbour spores and mites.
