Keeping and re-sowing sweet pea seeds
« on: August 25, 2010, 12:01 »
This is a question about sweet pea seeds.

So, mine are still flowering well but instead of buying more seed I thought I might have  go at keeping and re-sowing my own.

Does anyone have advice on when to pick the seed pods (while they are still 'green' or wait till dry), do I keep them in the dark and warm, or in an envelope in the shed etc etc.

Is it possible to keep seeds and sow next year or better to buy new?

Thanks

Sweet pea seeds can be saved and grown next year, but as they're quite promiscuous, there's no guarantee as to what colours or blends you'll get next time.

Wait until the seed pods start to turn brown but before they're quite dry as they have a bad habit of bursting open dried pods and flinging seeds everywhere. I take mine out of the pods to let them finish drying on a non-papery surface, then store them in a labeled envelope.
