So am I the only one who.....

.... uses potash on my beds?
Every now again again I tend to burn things that have been pulled out of the ground, you know the sort of things, weeds/soil, plant roots, plant leaves, generally anything green, as well as old bits of timber/pallets. twigs etc.
I end up with a fire that burns for days and every now and again I draw this up from the edges and recover it, the end result (after it has cooled of course) is a nice pile of orange potash.
One of my neighbours popped in the other day and didnt understand why I was doing it, but as I told him, as a lad, my dad used to do it on his allotment and my brothers have always done it on their plots as they told me it is a way of adding potassium into the soil.
Does anyone else do this too or am I the only one?

It could be a bit anti-social to leave a fire smouldering for days, maybe that's what your neighbour was getting at? I'm sure the same end could be achieved by leaving everything until it has dried and then having a quick hot fire.

I think that the 'orange potash' is burnt clay.  We usually find a bit when digging out where the bonfire has been, though our fires do not usually last more than a couple of days and we do not have neighbours to annoy.

Good for the garden.

Can I just clarify... the greens were not wet, and after the first hour or so there was very little smoke as the had all dried off with the 6' high flames...

I mix it with the earth in the chicken run to stop it getting too acidic with all the droppings. I also spread it around fruit bushes / trees. I don't use it in the growing beds in case it damages the tender roots of  my veg plants.
