babysitting friends chicks.
« on: August 14, 2010, 19:14 »
any ideas. i have offered to look after two chicks, about 3 months old. my friend has been looking after chickens for 20 + years, and said they might be pecked.  unfortunately, one of the chicks has been pecked, and she has what looks like a scalped head, but not bleeding.
i have separated them now. my friend was not too concerned about the mixing of new chicks, but after reading some blogs, maybe she could have warned me. do you think it will heal, or shall i get her to a vet. the skin is broken, but it is not bleeding. by the way, i have kept ducks for 3 years, and started on chickens this year. welcome to my good life!!

Her head will heal, if you have any germalene try putting that on her to soothe it. If these chicks are not yours anyway I would keep them seperate from your own, they are bound to be attacked as they are intruders on your own girls space. How long have you offered to look after them?
Staffies are softer than you think.

Hi joyfull. i have already separated them. have set up a temporary shelter for them. i only have them for a week, so they will be back to their owner next friday. they are very easy to look after, so no problems there. was more concerned with the head, so will treat as you suggested. thank you for you swift reply. gary.

just to let you know, the scalped chick is on the mend. applied cream, and has healed very well. they are in a small enclosure away from my lot, and they seem very happy. :)
