Can I save my Leeks
« on: September 05, 2010, 20:04 »
Hello

I pulled a couple of leeks today for lunch only to find a little maggots at the top having a good munch so I cut that bit off and used the rest I assume its the onion fly doing it's business -

So as for my crop of leeks if I leave them they will be lost so I thought about pulling them up saving what I can and freezing them as least I've have something - is there any reason against doing this OH not sure about freezing leeks although not sure why??

Thanks
Missy

Missy - if the maggots are at the top and are greenish white in colour then they're probably leek moth. Onion fly tend to lay at soil level so will tend to affect the base of the plant.

No reason why you shouldn't freeze the leeks - I'd be inclined to turn them into leek and potato or cockaleekie soup and freeze as leeks freeze particularly well in soups.
