Know yer onions
« on: July 06, 2007, 07:52 »
Looking at the photos of onions in my veg books and on this website I think I may have planted my onion sets too deep. Does it matter?
They are growing beautifully but definitely aren't showing very much above ground.

Depends on how deep you have planted them, usually I do mine up to their neck, they push themselves up a bit any way.

Emotions just click on the one you want and it will insert it for you. :D

If you want more then http://bestsmileys.com/ is a good place to start just copy the tag at the side and paste it into your text.

Too deep shouldn't be a problem as I'd imagine that a bit of hoeing and a bit (well a lot of) rain should lower the soil around the necks. Personally once my onions pop up I give them a decent weeding and then mulch the lot with an inch or so of rotted manure. Seems to work
Ah well ! There is always next year !
