brahmas help
« on: September 20, 2010, 15:19 »
some kind gentleman in the next village has offered me his two brahmas one male one female. He says the male does not crow he say they dont try to have their wicked way with other birds and that they are very friendly.

I am planning on letting them live with my 7 other birds(hybridsand ex bats) once they have acclimitised they will go free range.

Does anyone have any reasons why anything that has been said is not true and if i can do wat i want.

many thanks

In spring the chances are the cockerel will crow and being a male the odds are that he will also mate with any other bird that is around and lets him, sorry. Brahmas are very big boys so I would be a little bit weary if you have small breeds but hopefully by next spring (thats if he waits that long) your ex batties should be strong enough to cope or quick enough to get out of his way  ::)
Staffies are softer than you think.

joyful more issues really the gentleman has 4 cockrels and one hen, one silkie male a polish hen and a cross of some sort.

the brahma does not lay, the polish does once a month. I am a little confused as to why this gentleman is getting rid of these chickens he says he has too many.

when do brahma start to lay and wat should i do with 4 cockrels

Do you really want 4 cockerels??? That said of course if you do they will have to be kept separate from one another once they reach maturity. Unless you have a very large area to free range them. I run 2 cockerels but they range over more than an acre of land with their ladies.

I am quite new to this and this gentleman has assured me they are very gentle creatures and that they do not fight. He maintains they are like 6 months old so not yet fully matured.

I am thinking i should say no to his kind offer. If any one reading this wants them i am sure he wont mind. he just wants to et rid of them.

if they have been bought up together then cockerels often don't fight, I have severel and they all know who is the top boy.  Like orchard lady though mine do free range and have a half acre garden plus a bridleway and a huge field that they wander into. If you don't want this many boys and don't want to eat them then sadly yes do decline his offer.
