Hello from Ruislip
« on: August 07, 2010, 14:32 »
Hi, I live in Ruislip and want to keep a couple of pekin bantams. My garden is just flower beds and a path and I don't know where to start with a place for a run. I think I may have to give up a flower bed! For starters: How big a coop do I need? How big a run? I'll get on to the rest later .... Help me please!

Ideally you should get 3 hens (just in case something happens to 1 of the hens thus avoiding leaving 1 on it's own). The recommended perch length needed per bird is 8-10" per bantam or 12" per large fowl although usually they will use less than this as they do like to huddle.
The size of the run is more important. They need ideally 2 square meters of usable ground floor space per bird (although if they are to be in the run all the time then I would advise 3 sq meters per bird.
Staffies are softer than you think.

Great choice of chook.... not as destructive as other bigger breeds and so pretty to look at....... I breed these and never get tired of them :)  So many different colours to choose from :)
I love Pekins, Polands and Seramas :) and eggs!!!
