White sugar in chutney?
« on: August 05, 2010, 20:54 »
All of the recipes that I have seen have said o use dark sugar in chutney. Can anyone tell me if it would be ok to use standard white sugar?
Thanks

I have used it before and the chutney tasted fine.......but looked a rather insipid sludge colour. Nowadays if I use white I add a few drops of gravy browning (a brown food colouring..not the stuff you make gravy with  )

Thanks for the advise. I was going to make some plum chutney tonight but only had white sugar in the house. I will nip to tesco tomorrow for some dark sugar. Thanks again.
