Key Lime Pie with Oranges???
« on: July 31, 2010, 10:36 »
Hi,
I often make Key Lime Pie & wondered if there was any reason why it wouldn't work with Oranges. Anyone tried this, would appreciate feedback. Thanks

Wouldn't it just be an orange pie then?? Equally scrummy, of course, but it wouldn't be Key Lime, now would it?

No It would definetley be an Orange Pie  :)
but I have never seen a recipe for it or a recipe alternative suggestion using oranges or lemon instead. Wondered if there was a reason & didn't want to waste all my ingredients on it for nothing that's all

I think its because Key Lime Pie is such a part of American cookery culture it could be perceived as an insult to offer any alternative flavoring.

There is IMHO no reason why you couldn't replace the lime juice and zest with orrange, but I think I'd reduce the sugar or do half and half using lemon to keep the tang. One things certain is if you start with good ingredients you can't really go wrong with this. Give it a go - you could have invented a new modern classic!  you could call it a Key Sharonx Pie :)

Have you done it yet? Did it work?

I have invented a new classic - didn't have enough flour for a sponge today, and of course I only realised this once I had already creamed everything together, so I made up the shortfall with ground almonds. Used  cherry jam for filling and, blow me, it's turned out one of the best sponge cakes I've ever made! :D

Key limes are actually different from regular limes in size and flavour, hence the specialty. If you want orange pie, you'd need to find a sweet flavourful orange that would suit, which means experimenting. No hardship there, I'm sure  :D

Hi - Yes I finally got round to making it and I can say it was a success! The orange, ginger & bitter chocolate compliment each other great. I would totally agree it needs a bit of experimenting with Oranges & i will try again with a different type other than just using Jaffa. May pop to M&S for a stronger variety. All in all a good outcome though & will def play around with it for improvement. Thanks for all your imput  :)
