This is my 1st year with the plot and I have been letting the potatoes grow from the previous guy...so I haven't a clue what they are!

Dug some up and they all looked ok, put them in water to wash them and 1 floated up...opened up to find 4 little black slugs.  When I looked closer I could see it was damaged.

But is this the way to tell if there's slugs inside?  What about those that look fine?  Am I going to cook them and find slugs while eating them

Well, of course not, they'll be ex-slugs by the time they've been cooked. 

Anyway, back on topic, I don't think there's a foolproof way of identifying spuds which have slug damage other than through thorough inspection when washing / chopping.

If the pots have a hole in them, then core it our with a peeler to see what's beneath.
