poorley sweetcorn ???
« on: July 25, 2010, 21:01 »
Hi I thought my sweetcorn was doing really well but over the last week or so I have lost 3 plants and the others are starting to look sick, they are going from a strong green coulour to limp light green with saggy leaves awhich then turn brown.

what have I done wrong ???
First year growing, so far, so good.

Hi. Having exactly the same problem. Same thing happened last year too. Are you growing yours in the soil, or in pots/grow bags? Sweetcorn roots very deeply, and this may be the problem, but I am no expert, and would welcome a more learned view! We are growing ours in a very deep, large pot, but look like losing them again.

Have they been watered?

Have they been fed?

Have you got a piccie?  :)
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Hi we are growing ours in the ground its the first year for us with sweetcorn, we do tomatoes and other stuff well so thought we'd have a go at this, this year.

We water every night and sometimes in a morning if its been really dry, feeding I would have to say no what do I feed them ? and sorry no piccie as my camera kindly packed up begining of the week 2 weeks before the big family holiday, maybe it got the same illness as the sweetcorn lol

That sounds a lot to me. or you are only giving them a light watering, but often - which is generally not a good idea.  A thorough soaking, so that the water gets right down to the deeper roots, and then leave for 2 or 3 days, should be enough.

If you water lightly (any plant, really) it encourages surface rooting - where the water is - and then those roots are subject to the full heat of the Sum

I water from a can and I suppose a 2 gallon watering can does about 6 plants, maybe 9 - in case that is any help!
