Separating a cockerel from the hens
« on: July 24, 2010, 06:48 »
Some of my hens are wearing a bit thin with the attention of Kiltie the cockerel. I think they and their feathers could do with a bit of a rest. If i were to separate him for a while do i put him in an area so that they can all still see each other and will he be okay on his own? How long should i keep them apart as 3  of the girls in particular are looking very bare? Thanks Maggie

you could do that or buy or make a poultry saddle for them although not all hens take too kindly to wearing them. Things should ease up a little over winter  :)
Staffies are softer than you think.

  didn't look at that bit - looks like the seperation route, poultry saddle or perhaps more girls are needed for him  :D

I would try a poultry saddle as the feathers will not re-grow until they moult. This I know from experience!! :)
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!

We had to separate our cockerel for more or less the same reasons. He is in a separate enclosure and can clearly see all his girls
He seems fine on his own. We do sometimes let a couple of the stronger hens who can cope with him () go in with him  :).

I think that although a good idea a poultry saddle might be just a bit too hot for them as temperatures during the day here at the moment are well above 40 deg centigrade. If i were to separate him during the day could he still roost with them at night? Thanks, Maggie

I don't see why not, as long as you separate him from them in the morning  :)
