Green Manure paths
« on: July 18, 2010, 23:44 »
The paths on our plot don't get a lot of traffic - just me and Mrs Z using them to access the no-walk beds. some paths are just bare earth and weeds, which get pulled and composted and the main central path is lawn grass which tends to keep short without too much strimming as it gets walked on the most.

i was thinking of scalping the grass off and sowing White Clover in its place. Just as hardy, drought resistant and when it is cut can be used on the beds as a nitrogen rich mulch or put in the compost bin. Attractive to bees which in turn would be around to pollinate everything.

I am thinking of starting with the minor paths and replacing the main path eventually.

Any thoughts?

Isn't white clover a bit invasive? I have it all over my plot and thought it was a weed!
If I can make use of it that's great :)

Maybe I've missed something about your grand plan.

However, I'd have thought that you wouldn't need to sow anything on your paths.
Judging by what you have said, I would leave the paths as they are; cut the growth (whatever that may be) regularly, and chuck it on the compost heap.
The successes and failures of each year keep me motivated for the following year.

White clover makes deep tap roots and adds nutrients to the soil, but I find it a bit tall for walking in, particularly with bees constantly hovering through it. Just read a site where they recommend cocksfoot (dactylis glomerata) for paths. It's short and produces masses of roots for tilth.

You could start the clover in modules and then plant it into your grass paths. You could also do this on your weed paths.
