I can see no reason why you can't plant in July. I often add a few extra plants to help extend the runner bean season.

Varieties?  In my case which ever seed packet still has some seeds in it.

You could sow direct or try hurrying a few on by sowing into paper pots and keeping a close eye on them until they germinate then plant them out with a dash of slug bait to give them a chance.  ;)

I have not heard of broad beans being planted at this time of year. They take 26 wks from planting to cropping sp the first frosts would probably kill all the flowers.

In my garden they are only planted in spring having tried autumn planting for a few years and losing 90% of the plants.

I'm no broad bean expert, but our faithful....

Sowing and Harvest Chart

gives until March for outdoor sowing, (until you come to over-wintering), although Doc. Hessayon stretches this until April, so I think July is a no-no!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I am a newbie so often try something because I don't know any better! I started broad beans off in newspaper pots and planted them out after Easter  - well after the cold snap. A couple of weeks later (around mid to end of may) I planted some more beans alongside in the hopes that I might get a successional crop. They were up in no time and last week I harvested the first lot, and noticed tht the flowers on the second lot were dropping and leaving small pods behind, so I am expecting more broad beans within the next week or so. That is nowhere near 26 weeks - more like 10 at the most! I would say, give it a try - what do you have to lose?

I admit I had to look this up.

Dr. H. says 26 weeks for over-winter grown beans, but 14 for spring sown ones which is near Chris's mark.

So... October, if the weather holds, or we get an Indian summer?  Could you plant them in pots, then move them under cover if the weather looks dodgy?  All my over-wintering ones didn't, and I didn't have any room in spring to plant any...

I planted my last crop  the last week of October last year and have just harvested them, for my first time I was thrilled with the results, after podding the remainder for freezing I ended up with 7 kilo's shelled! :) And we ate many when they were young too ::).

It was such a success I was hoping to put some in again though can wait until October to do them again, the variety was Aquadulce Claudia and towards the end became brown spotted on the leaves from something?!-so I decided to harvest them all just in case!

Thank you all for replying,I am wondering what to plant next?I wonder if I can start some brussels or something

Now hang on a minute.... It wasn't my fault I was tired and not with it!!

I could have sworn it said: "runner beans"!      :nowink:

My hunch is everything has been late this year including summer so I have today sown in pots and modules in a poly greenhouse: Swedes, Peas, Runner Beans, Broad Beans, Lettuce, Kohl Rabi, French Beans and Mange Toute; all to go in my recently vacated Potato bed.

I think I will have time to harvest this lot and then so an overwintering green manure crop (Winter Tares). But then I am living south so warm seasons are usually longer here.

I planted Broad beans in May due to the cold spring and the first pods have appeared so will be harvesting through August hopefully.

I also planted some Kohl Rabi on the first day of July and plan to plant some Swedes this week. So you could say better late than never is the best policy.

Other than that always consider your local situation rather than the back of the packet
