Leek moth strikes again
« on: July 15, 2010, 16:29 »
I thought I was ready for it this year.  Nice thick young plants are ready to go in the pentland javelin bed this weekend.  Dug bed over this morning, added compost and chicken pellets.  Got debris netting out of shed to cover against the dreaded pest.  Checked seedlings after lunch and guess what?  Crawling with maggots :tongue2:  I've chopped the tops off and tried to squish what I can so I'm gonna bung them in and hope for the best.  Fingers crossed.

Depends where you live, not everyone gets it.  All I know is it's rife in Somerset, completely destroyed my crop last year.

I posted a few weeks back about it on my garlic, but nobody really picked up on it. It didn't really affect the crop in the end. I've had it the last few years on leeks, so I'm sure I'll get it again this year  ::)
Cheers, Comfortably Numb.

I'm just off down the greenhouse. I won't be long ..........................

It would be interesting to see who is affected and where they are.  My dad took half my young plants and grew a fantastic crop and he's only just over the border in Devon.
