Copper spray treatment for potatoes
« on: July 04, 2010, 11:13 »
I sprayed my maincrop potatoes with a copper-based fungicide. I used the minimum concentration (it is a preparation intended for all blight-sensitive crops, such as tomatoes and potatoes) but inadvertently starting spraying my new potato crop. I was using one of those hand sprays people used for house plants, no heavy duty equipment. The question is does the fact that I sprayed them prevent me from consuming my new potatoes for the time being? Is there a waiting period and if so how long?

It should say in the instructions for use on the packet, rather than us guessing. It's always a good idea to follow them!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Hi  If you have a look on the Pesticides Safety Directorate web site, they have a data base section which will give you garden and agricultural listings.  This will tell you if there is a minimum period to leave between spraying and harvesting.

This should be the link to the garden use section  https://secure.pesticides.gov.uk/garden/prodsearch.asp
but the agri one might contain more info on the harvesting interval.  The main one probably one deals with the product components though rather than the brand name

Hope that helps.

i would say they are safe to eat as the spray you are using is not systemic (please check no other chemicals included) but to be on the safe side make sure they are washed !!!

birmancats. Just a comment to say that Anton is in Belgium, the list linked to is for UK approval, things may be different there, although being ruled by Brussels - maybe not!

Bram - that sounds like your opinion, I did ask please not to guess, but to follow instructions, we are playing with chemicals here.

Oops.  Hadn't noticed the location.   Back to the precautions on the product label then as you said.
