Manure league
« on: June 30, 2010, 16:26 »
Having been reading for a while I was concluding most people have their favoured animal bi-product....

Here is my top list on order of preference- anyone have any comments!

No1- Horse- but not if on shavings!
No2- Sheep
No3- Chicken/goose
No4- Bovine
No5- Pig (would rank higher but too smelly!)

For me horse manure has the easy to get, and not to aromatic edge over everything else, my grandad used to say Donkey was better tho (but not as much around!)

Where as our dogs claim sheeps poop it the best!! ::)
Very often quite lost- would be more lost if I could work out where I was!- But always find my way home.....

As your dogs opinion is taken into acount here are we talking for gardening purposes or for rolling in? :D.
I had a load of horse manure delivered this year 7 tones of it, a fine vintage (two years old) the only problem i find is that it seems to take a long time to break down if not put on to overwinter. It dries out quickly and the birds toss it around along with any young plants which dont seem to get a good footing in it. I am not kidding i have to go on regular patrols to replant stuff they have pulled out . other than that I have no complaints.

No.1  Horse, purely because we have our own producers.

No.2  Pig, my grandfather kept pigs and his garden was a dream.

No.3  Chicken, we also have our own team.

As for the rest I wouldn't know. ???

Neither for my dog. He just eats it  :)

My great uncle was a gardener by trade and his advice was always to seek manure which had been stacked for at least twelve months but preferrably two years.

1) Horse manure with straw used as bedding

2) Cattle manure with straw bedding (this has to be well weathered)

3) Chicken manure

4) Sheep manure with straw bedding ( This has a very high straw content so I use it mainly for building up the soil rather than boosting  NPK levels)

with the last one you need to be able to source it from farmers who lamb indoors and have space to stack it for a while as it is usually only available around April- May time.

Wife's Uncle always used to say the fart from a bullock was better than the * from a cow.
'Nullius in verba' - 'Take nobody's word for it'

Donkey better than horse...Mmm

Now I can embarrass my children further by collecting donkey poo as well as seaweed when we go for a walk on the beach.

But who gets to carry the bucket? ???
