Monster egg!
« on: July 07, 2010, 18:03 »
Have 3 POL which have all just started laying within the last week or so.  Have mostly been getting what I would describe as small eggs.  However, on Monday and again today one of them has laid a monster egg (extra, extra large) perhaps the size of a duck egg with white chalky patches on it.

Is this usual or might something be wrong?

It is quite common in POL chickens when they start laying. I had one a few weeks ago which was 115g and I thought oh my god the chicken must be disfigured for life. I even checked them to see if they were still all walking normal! Someone else reported they had an egg weighing 6oz. Surely their weighing scales must heve been out of calibration.

It can become a problem if the egg breaks inside the chicken when laying or if they become egg bound but this is not too common.

Don't worry all will be OK with your chuck.

I have just weighed ....... the monster egg is 80g compared to the ones they have been laying coming in around 50g.

What about the chalky marks on shell - is that normal to start with too - both the monster eggs have them but none of the normal sized eggs?

my moster egg was 77g. Im not sure about the chalky marks. At a guess i wud say it was just residue from the shell that dried. But im no expert. Hopefully a more experienced member can help you with that.
