Something getting into the run!
« on: June 30, 2010, 09:18 »
Hi, I wonder if you guys can help.

I noticed yesterday that something has been digging under the run, near the food. I put some bricks there as a deterrent but found them pused aside this morning. Surely only a badger could do this? Any ideas for badger deterrents? They are shut in at dusk most nights, although there is the odd occasion where I don’t get home until around 10/11pm to close the door.

What’s the best solution here?! I’m going to try bringing the food in at night just in case that’s all they are after.

I hope you can help, I don’t want to lose my chooks :o(

If you can't dig weldmesh into the ground, you can make a "skirt" for the run.  Staple weldmesh along the bottom of the run so it lies flat on the ground.  The grass will grow through it so you can't see it eventually.

Unfortunately if you have a determined predator, then you may find that they begin to tunnel at the edge of the skirt and just pop under it.

Edited for my atrocious spelling!

it could be rats in which case you need rat traps around or poison.
Staffies are softer than you think.

Hi had same prob few months ago but left it too long and ended up with rat problem. We have sorted it eventually using humane rat trap.Best bait peanut butter! Leave trap in place on outside of run where they tunnel and after few days bait it.They will be confident at it not being strange and worked well for us this way. Good luck!
